Instructions After Your Surgery

  1. Bite firmly on the gauze packs which have been placed over the extraction sites.  Do this until arriving home.
  2. Remove the gauze, eat, and drink cold beverages.  Types of foods to eat include any that you would normally consume, are soft, and that have cooled to room temperature or are already cold.  After eating take one dose of pain medicine.  (Note time here: _________________________________)
  3. Replace gauze over extraction sites.
  4. At this time the patient needs to lie with their head elevated, with ice packs placed on the face where teeth were removed or where surgical procedures were performed.
  5. Continue to eat and drink a soft, cool diet throughout the day.  If oozing has stopped the gauze may be removed. (always remove gauze when the patient is eating or drinking)  Slight oozing may persist for 24-48 hours after surgery.  If oozing is heavy, continue to use gauze as needed.
  6. Continue the pain medicine, antibiotics and decadron (if prescribed) according to the directions on the prescriptions or as your doctor directed.

 Additional Information

  • DO NOT vigorously rinse the mouth on day of surgery.  Beginning the next day, rinse frequently with warm salt water.  (1-teaspoon salt per 8 oz glass of warm water)

  •  The patient has been given ice packs to help control swelling after surgery.  These ice packs need to be kept on the side of the patient’s face for 24 hours starting immediately after surgery.

  •  The day after surgery may bring an increase in swelling.  If swelling occurs use hot packs or a heating pad on the side of the patient’s face.  Once swelling appears, it may take several days to subside.

  • Birth control pills may NOT be effective while taking antibiotics

  • DO NOT smoke, drink through a straw, or spit for 24 hours after surgery.

  •  The teeth should be given their usual care.  Be gentle in the region where the extractions took place
