Instructions
After Your Surgery
- Bite firmly on the gauze packs which have been placed
over the extraction sites. Do
this until arriving home.
- Remove the gauze, eat, and drink cold beverages.
Types of foods to eat include any that you would normally
consume, are soft, and that have cooled to room temperature or are
already cold. After
eating take one dose of pain medicine.

- Replace gauze over extraction sites.
- At this time the patient needs to lie with their head
elevated, with ice packs placed on the face where teeth were removed
or where surgical procedures were performed.
- Continue to eat and drink a soft, cool diet throughout
the day. If oozing has
stopped the gauze may be removed. (always
remove gauze when the patient is eating or drinking)
Slight oozing may persist for 24-48 hours after surgery.
If oozing is heavy, continue to use gauze as needed.
- Continue the pain medicine, antibiotics and decadron
(if prescribed) according to the directions on the prescriptions or as
your doctor directed.

Information

DO NOT vigorously rinse the mouth on day of
surgery. Beginning the
next day, rinse frequently with warm salt water.
(1-teaspoon salt per 8 oz glass of warm water)

The patient has been given ice packs to
help control swelling after surgery.
These ice packs need to be kept on the side of the patient’s
face for 24 hours starting immediately after surgery.

The day after surgery may bring an increase
in swelling. If swelling
occurs use hot packs or a heating pad on the side of the patient’s
face. Once swelling
appears, it may take several days to subside.

Birth control pills may NOT be effective while
taking antibiotics

DO NOT smoke, drink through a straw, or spit for
24 hours after surgery.

The teeth should be given their usual care.
